Ausflug in den Dschungel
Trip into the jungle
It is different from the others - mysterious, promising, of lush beauty, with many facets, bright and dark: the Richtis Gorge, located in the north-east of Crete between Kovousi and Sitia. From the village of Exo Mouliana, it winds its way down to the sea over a length of just over five kilometers.
The starting point is a parking lot a few hundred meters east of Exo Moulina on the main road. The Richtis Gorge is known for its lush vegetation: trees of all kinds stretching their branches upwards in sometimes grotesque twists in search of light, oleanders of unusual height, plants known as houseplants in huge dimensions, scattered palm trees in the middle of a deciduous forest, oregano in abundance at the end.
The path winds along a creek, sometimes on one side, sometimes on the other. Sometimes there are wooden planks, sometimes just a few stepping stones that you have to balance on. In season, the gorge costs an entrance fee (currently three euros), but the money is well spent: The path is very well marked, and there are wooden bridges and steps in difficult places. Particularly interesting is the staircase construction that leads down to a small rest area at a very impressive waterfall in the middle of the gorge.
In places, the gorge is reminiscent of a gorge in Germany or Austria, but a little later it resembles a tropical jungle, a Tomb Raider scene. Although Lara Croft would certainly have climbed the boulders over which the path sometimes leads much more elegantly than we would.
The remains of some former mills and old buildings can still be found along the way. The creek sometimes collects in small ponds, covered by dense foliage. The mystical, mysterious atmosphere of this fairytale world casts a spell over visitors.
And especially in summer, the shady and water-rich Richtis Gorge is a good alternative to the hot sun-drenched rocky gorges for which Crete is so famous.
